Beginning on January 7th, California has been dealing with wildfires that have been spreading all throughout the state. These fires initially formed due to the droughts, strong winds in the city Santa Ana, and low humidity. Those especially who live in Los Angeles county were forced to go under evacuation from 6 pm to 6 am. Palisades, Eaton, and Hurst hold the most active fires, as they have burned many acres and structures down.
As powerful winds picked up, it became even more difficult for firefighters to tackle these fires. These winds blare at a speed of 20-30 mph, and with the potential to blow even faster. It is claimed that 14% of the fires are now under control. Something that has been noted is that the grass and shrubs in Los Angeles contribute substantially to the fires, as they are more prone to burning simply because of climate change and dryness. As California has been experiencing both wet and dry weather conditions over the past couple of years, it led to both flammable and dangerously parched vegetation. California is expected to prepare for the worst-case scenario, as they are predicting that upcoming rainfall will bring flooding and landslides.
These wildfires have left thousands devastated and anxious, as many families attempt to continue their lives after these fires severely impacted their life. Los Angeles fires have shut down child-care facilities, so numerous families are at the loss of care. 16 family child-care homes and 21 child-care centers have been burned down. Additionally, 284 child-care facilities besides these are no longer available. This is due to ash, debris, lack of potable water, or power outages.
28 lives have been taken because of these horrid flames. The wildfires, specifically the smoke, also play part in worsening people’s health issues. This includes chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, and Covid-19. Others with infections like pneumonia and bronchitis are also in jeopardy. Because it is also the flu season, California is undergoing an increase in flu cases, as a result of people being pushed into shelters with an overflowing amount of people.
