SZA, one of America’s favorite R&B singers, just made her acting debut in “One of Them Days,”a comedy about two roommates. The film hit theaters in January, and has received mixed reviews thus far.
The film starts off by showing Dreux (Keke Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA) as roommates in an old and rundown apartment with a strict landlord. On the first of the month the landlord demands his rent money, threatening to evict them if they don’t pay him by 6PM. This confuses Dreux and Alyssa as they thought it was already paid, but they then find out it was stolen by Alyssa’s
boyfriend. The two women go on a long journey together to get the money, displaying their friendship and chaotic relationship. The film has a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 6.6/10 on IMDB. Critics say,“ Keke Palmer and SZA have incredible presences by themselves and out-of-this-world chemistry together”, “a breath of fresh air because it has two female leads”, “as hilarious as it is casually nerve-wracking..”.
Some thought it was too fast-paced; Amelia Harvey, a movie blogger, stated “One of Them Days flies along at 100 mph the entire time... Perhaps it would have benefited from taking a moment to step back and sit in the joke rather than always having another situation and character ready to go.”
